Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art is delighted to be hosting this Special Exhibition Visionaries: Making Another Perspective at Higashiyama Cube. In an age of drastic social change defined by increased environmental awareness and technological advancements, the importance of what humans can do is being reexamined. Curated and supervised by Kawakami Noriko, who has been contemplating design at the core of her practice, this exhibition features twenty up-and-coming artists (individuals and collectives) working in art and design who are developing remarkable activities in Japan through flexible approaches that are attentive to the history of humans and the earth.
The “boundless energy toward creation” emitted from the work and activities of these artists who, born mainly in the 1970s and 1980s, deftly connect and reinterpret diverse relationships between the past and future, nature and artifice, and the information environment and real society, will vividly emerge in this exhibition, answering the demands of turbulent times.

Curatorial Supervisor’s Message
We often hear the term “anthropocene,” a classification proposed by Nobel Prize winner in chemistry Paul Crutzen to describe a new era we are entering in which human activities are having a major impact on the earth. We feel more strongly than ever the importance of taking time to pause in the midst of change and take a fresh look at our surroundings, as well as to consider the relationship between people and nature from new perspectives.
This exhibition introduces messages in the present tense from twenty groundbreaking artists and collectives who, with boundless energy, attempt to capture the world’s vicissitudes with their whole being. Taking a cue from their perspectives and approaches to production, this exhibition offers a chance to consider the creative power of individuals who have been attentively searching for the next step forward regardless of the era we face.Curatorial Supervisor: Kawakami Noriko
After working in the editorial department of the design magazine AXIS, she became an independent journalist in 1994 and has been involved in exhibition planning as Associate Director of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT since 2007. 1. The world marvels! Visionary hints for “survival and creativity” in Japanese craftsmanship
The world’s attention is focused on contemporary Japanese creators who are exploring future lifestyles based on the traditions of Japan. Currently showing vigorous activities, the artists and designers participating in this exhibition are pursuing practices not confined to any single field such as art, design, fashion, architecture, or video
The exhibited works, including many new pieces, are born from a diverse range of creative processes, from individual to collective to projects involving members from different fields. In these works, one can discern a foresight that looks to survival in turbulent times, acceptance of the unknown, and creation for the future.2. “100 years from now” explored by the successors to Kyoto’s artisanry
The exhibition will also focus on teams based in Kyoto that are developing innovative activities while inheriting history and tradition. Including Hosoo Masataka of Hosoo (founded in 1688) and Yagi Takahiro of Kaikado (founded in 1875), GO ON was formed by six future leaders from six companies
(Hosoo, Kohchosai Kosuga, Nakagawa Mokkougei, Kaikado, Kanaami Tsuji, Asahiyaki Ware). The theme of the group is “What should be done today to connect ‘objects’ used in everyday life to a time 100 years from now?” Hosoo’s research, which attempts to expand the possibilities of traditional craft together with scientists and mathematicians, along with the creative actions of other members will be introduced.3. Research by high-profile designers presented in debut new works and installations
The exhibition will introduce the latest activities of designers who have attracted worldwide attention by solving problems through rigorous research. The A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE team, which proposes innovative garment making, will present its latest collection incorporating techniques inherited in Kyoto. Also not to be missed are the installation for this exhibition based on research by TAKT PROJECT and the exhibition of glow ⇄ grow: globe, a work focusing on the relationship between artifice and nature that will undergo changes throughout the exhibition. The serene installation by Tamura Nao, who works in New York, will also be on view for the first time in Japan.
4. A collection of “visionary” talents in exhibition design!
The exhibition design is led by Sano Fumihiko, an architect/artist who has been working on the concept of Japanese culture in the contemporary age based on his experience at Nakamura Sotoji Komuten, famous for its Sukiya style (tea-ceremony house) architecture. In addition, the scenography will be overseen by Endo Yutaka, LUFTZUG, who is internationally active as a technical director for exhibitions and stage performances, while Noma Shingo will take charge of graphic design. These creators, who are expected to make great strides in the future, will join forces for this exhibition. Sano will also present a new work as a participating artist.
