Mukai Eriko has attempted to “approach” invisible or ungraspable phenomena and systems in society such as livestock slaughter, oil drilling, water vapor circulation, and the wool industry, through performances that utilize life-size devices as motifs. The performances, which involve devices made of everyday materials such as wood, cloth, and vinyl and the methodical gestures that move them, are presented as a series of abstract mechanisms that are interpreted and reconstructed by the artist. The Approach series can be considered an attempt by Mukai to look at and draw near to the “unknowable”. It is not merely an act of repetition for the sake of understanding, but also an illumination of how we view the work. In this exhibition, works will be presented through various approaches that include empirical or conceptual understanding, misinterpretation, and the action of retaining the unknowable.
The Triangle
The Triangle is a space newly created for the reopening of the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art. It aims to nurture emerging artists, especially those associated with Kyoto, and to provide opportunities for museum visitors to experience contemporary art. In order to connect the artist, museum, and viewer in a triangle and deepen those connections, the space hosts an eponymous series of special exhibitions and presents new artistic expressions from Kyoto.Information
