Araki Masamitsu: Zombies and Me

Araki Masamitsu constructs highly original sound spaces based on fieldwork and his acoustic experiences. Alongside his own theater pieces and installations, Araki is a member of the documentation group ARCHIVES PAY and the music group NEW MANUKE. “Making sound starts from listening to sound,” he says. In this way, his work has continued to emphasize the creativity of the listening environment, rather than the act of creating sound itself. This exhibition similarly focuses on “making a place for listening,” with Araki harnessing the unique architectural features of the museum to create a space as a device for playing sound. The timbre of the recorded sound, the reverberation that occurs in the gallery when the sound is played, and the acoustic changes caused by the physical movements of the viewers all produce infinite layers of resonance and rebound, from which appears intangible sound.
About “The Triangle”
“The Triangle” is a space that is newly created on the occasion of the renewal opening of the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art. Our aim is for it to become a venue to nurture emerging artists, centered on artists associated with Kyoto, and to provide an opportunity for museum visitors to experience contemporary art. In order to connect the “artist, museum and viewer” in a triangle and deepen their connection, we will use this space to host a series of special exhibitions bearing the name “The Triangle” as we set out to present new artistic creations from Kyoto.Information
